Nicolas Tivani Crosses Line on Stage 2 of the 2024 Volta a Portugal as Stage Winner

Stage 2 of the 2024 Volta a Portugal covered 164.5 kilometers from Santarém to Lisbon. The stage was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Freedom Day in Portugal, following the route taken by the "Men of April" in the Carnation Revolution in 1974. The stage featured intense heat and strong northerly winds and there was one 4th category mountain prize in Santarém. Overall, however, the race was relatively flat with most of the minor climbs in the first 50 kilometers.

Early in the stage, American rider Zach Greg (Project Echelon Racing) launched a solo breakaway, later joined by the Portuguese César Fonte (Rádio Popular–Paredes–Boavista). The breakaway was caught about 49 kilometers from the finish line. The sprint finish in Lisbon's Marvila parish was hotly contested, marked by a lively and intense pace as teams positioned themselves for the sprint finish.

German Nicolás Tivani (Aviludo - Louletano - Loulé Concelho) was able to time his sprint perfectly and took the win at the line, followed closely by Tomas Contte (Aviludo - Louletano - Loulé Concelho) in second and Scott McGill (Project Echolog Racing) in third, covering the course in 3 hours and 49 minutes. Both Tivani and Contte hail from Argentina, but their Aviludo - Louletano - Loulé Concelho team is registered in Portugal, making it a proud Freedom Day at the Volta a Portugal for the national fan contingent.

Stage 1 winner Colin Stüssi (Team Vorarlberg) retained the overall race lead after this stage.

Stage 3 of the 2024 Volta a Portugal will cover a total distance of 161.2 kilometers, starting in Crato and finishing in Covilhã, beginning at 12:45 local time (13:45 CET)
