Stage 5 of the 2024 Volta a Portugal covered a distance of 176.8 kilometers, starting from Penedono and finishing in Bragança. Hugo Scala Jr. (Project Echelon Racing) proved to be the strongest rider on the day, crossing the line in Bragança Matias Novo on Stage 5 of the 2024 Volta a Portugal first. The 26-year-old America rider was battling Portuguese competitor Fabio Costa (ABTF Betão - Feirense) in the final rider, but was able to time his kick perfectly on the uphill finish and hold of Costa for the first stage win of his career, serving as grounds for him and the Project Echelon Racing team to celebrate.
Afonso Eulálio (ABTF Betão - Feirense) leads in the general classification after five stages, followed by Swiss rider Colin Stüssi (Team Vorarlberg) who is 16 seconds back of Eulálio, and Jon Agirre (Equipo Kern Pharma) is in third overall 26 seconds back of the leader. German Nicolás Tivani (Aviludo - Louletano - Loulé Concelho) leads in the points classification, while Luis Ángel Maté Mardones (Euskaltel–Euskadi) is atop the King of the Mountains classification after Stage 5.
Stage 6 will be a route from Bragança to Boticas over a distance of 169.1 kilometers, with five categorized climbs, including a Category 3 climb lasting 7.1 kilometers to begin the stage, meaning that it will be a day for climbers to take the initiative from the start.
