Drapac, a property fund management company, has joined cycling company Cannondale as a title sponsor for the 2017 Cannondale Drapac team. Cannondale-Drapac was founded in 2003, and has been on the current WorldTour since its inception in 2011.
Cannondale-Drapac is one of three American-based teams on the World Tour, and is managed by the American former professional cyclist Jonathan Vaughters.
The Cannondale-Drapac team are outfitted by New Balance and ride in their signature neon green jerseys and bibs. Cannondale-Drapac ride Cannondale bikes.
Sitting at 14th in the UCI WorldTour Team Ranking with 2843 UCI points, Cannondale-Drapac will be looking for strong results at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana coming up. Jonathan Vaughters stated at the beginning of the season that he wanted to build the team up for the Spring Classics, however they were not able to secure a signature win during that period.
The addition of Taylor Phinney in the off-season was a highlight for Cannondale-Drapac however. Phinney is the son of two Olympic cyclists, and grew up in the public eye as an elite junior rider. Phinney captured multiple racing titles, including the 2010, 2014, and 2016 American National Time Trial titles. In 2014, Phinney suffered a horrendous injury to his left leg at the U.S. National Road Race Championship, and required multiple surgeries. It appeared at the time that Taylor Phinney's career could be finished after the crash, but the American rider slowly worked his way back into the professional peloton through recovery and rehabilitation. The 2017 Tour de France will be Phinney's first, and will be a special moment for himself and his team.
Either Andrew Talansky or Rigoberto Uran may be Cannondale-Drapac's best shot at the Maillot Jaune this year, with both being capable tour riders. Talansky finished 3rd at this year's Tour of California, and has posted a 5th place finish at the 2016 Veulta a Espana and 11th place finish at the 2015 Tour de France. Rigoberto Uran has twice placed 2nd at the Giro d'Italia, in 2013 and 2014, and has two top-10 finishes at stage races in 2017 so far. Uran's best showing at the Tour de France however was a 23rd place finish in the general classification that came in 2011, and the Columbian rider has not been able to crack the top-25 of the Vuelta a Espana despite turning professional in 2006.
Cannondale-Drapac's 2017 Tour de France squad will include Patrick Bevin, Taylor Phinney, Sep Vanmarcke, Rigoberto Uran, Andrew Talansky, Pierre Roland, Dylan van Baarle, Simon Clarke, and Alberto Bettiol.
