Colin Stüssi Emerges Victorious on Stage 1 of 2024 Volta a Portugal

Colin Stüssi (Team Vorarlberg) emerged victorious on day 1 at the 2024 Tour a Portugal, powering past Antonio Carvalho (ABTF Betão - Feirense)

Stüssi was tightly followed by Carvalho until the final kilomteters, but was able to break him on the final climb of the day, which featured a route cover 158.2 kilometers from Anadia to Miranda do Corvo, south of the city of Aveiro in northern Portugal.

Whether Stüssi will be able to maintain his lead as the race enters the mountains will be an interesting development to follow.

Team Vorarlberg boasts a roster with experienced riders such as Colin Stüssi, Alexander Konychev, and Lukas Rüegg, who have consistently performed well in various competitions. However, the departure of key riders such as Alexis Guerin, Roland Thalmann, and Riccardo Zoidl could impact the team's overall strength and experience, as these riders were significant contributors to the team's past successes. The teams limited depth of support could also serve as a disadvantage over the full 10-stage race. The Volta a Portugal is a 10-stage race, which will finish on a 26.6-kilometer individual time trial in Viseu.

Stüssi finished 28 seconds ahead of Antonio Carvalho and 41 second in front of Luis Fernandes (Credibom - LA Alumínios - Marcos Car).

Stüssi, a Swiss-born rider, won last year's overall classification at the 2023 Volta a Portugal. He has previously finished 3rd in the Swiss National Road Championships road race in 2022, while also winning the overall classification of the Tour of Rhodes in 2017, a 2nd place overall finish at the Sibiu Cycling Tour in 2017, and a win in the the mountains classification in the Okolo Jižních Čech race in 2021.

Team Vorarlberg is a professional cycling team based in Austria, founded in 1999 by twin brothers Thomas and Johannes Kofler. Initially known as Team Volksbank, the team underwent several name changes before adopting its current name in 2009 when the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg became the title sponsor

Stage 2 will cover a distance of 164.5 km, starting in Santarém and finishing in Lisbon.
