What to Expect from Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France

Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France will begin in Plaisance and end in Turin. The route covers beautiful lands in the Po Valley of the Piedmont region in Italy over a total of 230.8 km in length. It will be flatter than the first two stages, and is expected to be a day in which a sprinter captures victory.

The route has three categorized climbs, but they are relatively minor in both length and gradient.  The finale features a few turns in the last 2 km, including a sharp bend with 2 km to go, followed by a right-hand turn and two softer left-hand turns in the final kilometer. The last 500 meters give the riders a slight uphill, presenting a minimal, but possibly meaningful challenge to the peloton on the final sprint and showing which rider is most able to harness top-end power.

Top contenders for the stage win include Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-deceuninck), Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny), Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco Alula), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek).

Also look out for Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Fabio Jakobsen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility). Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis).

Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Emirate) will begin the day as the overall leader in the Maillot Jaune.
