Kristoff Takes Final Stage as Geraint Thomas Captures First Tour de France Title

Going into the final stage of the 105th edition of the storied Tour de France, Team Sky rider Geraint Thomas was nearly assured to capture the title, and indeed at the end of the day he had done just that.

The final stage in Paris featured a fast and flat route around the historic city, as the sprinters competed for an opportunity at one last stage victory. While the final day is generally a formality in terms of general classification standings, teams are still looking to set up their sprinters to take victory on the Champs Elysees.

Thomas de Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) nearly spoiled the show for the sprinters, as the Belgian held off the peloton turning into the final 500 meters, but de Gendt could not hold off the pack as he was quickly overtaken with 300 meters remaining.

Alexander Kristoff (UAE-Team Emirates) fought off the hard-charging John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) at the line to capture the stage in impressive fashion.

As expected, Geraint Thomas did cross the line not long after the sprinters alongside four-time TdF winner and teammate Chris Froome to take home the Maillot Jaune at the 2018 Tour de France.

World champion and perennial favorite to win the points competition, Peter Sagan (Bora-Hangrohe), did indeed maintain the green jersey in dominant fashion, capturing 477 points and nearly doubling that of runner-up Alexander Kristoff with 246.

French rider Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step Floors) finished as the King of the Mountains, ahead of fellow countryman Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic).

Spanish team and staple on the Worldtour, Movistar, emerged as victors of the team competition, ahead of Bahrain Merida and Team Sky.

The final of the three major tours, the Vuelta a Espana, will commence in a couple weeks.
