After 8 Stages, Yates leads at 101st Giro d'Italia

Following Stage 8 of the 101st Giro d'Italia, in which Movistar rider Richard Carapaz beat out Davide Formolo (Bora-Hangrohe) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) at the finish, Englishman Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) remains the leader of the general classification.

Yates finished fifth on Stage 8 in a pack of approximately 30 riders, 7 seconds back of Carapaz.

Italian rider Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) currently holds a sizable lead in the points classification, totaling 178, ahead of Bora-Hangrohe's Sam Bennett with 100 sprint points thus far.

Richard Carapaz also retains his lead in the best young rider classification, holding a 36-second gap on Team Sunweb rider Sam Oomen and Dimension Data's Ben O'Connor.

Columbian Johan Esteban Chaves leads in the king of the mountains classification, with 35 points.

Stage 9 will feature a significant amount of climbing for riders, as a category 2 climb at the 108-kilometer mark will likely spread out the field before the final 50 kilometers truly challenges the peloton. Riders will begin a 14 kilometer-long category 1 climb 178 kilometers into the stage before the final push up the Gran Sasso d'Italia. The Gran Sasso will rise from 1255 meters in altitude to 2100 meters, with a maximum gradient of 13% approximately one kilometer from the summit.

Following Stage 9, riders will have a rest day on Tuesday, May 14.
