Nibali Emerges Victorious at 2018 Milan-San Remo

Veteran Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) captured his first Milan-San Remo title on his tenth career start at the race on Saturday, beating out Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) and Arnaud Demare (FDJ) at the line.

The grueling 294 kilometer race begin in Milan, slowly climbing to Passio Del Turchino near the halfway point.

In addition to that always challenging length, this year's edition was cold and damp early, with the sun peaking out as riders neared the finish.

With 27 kilometers remaining, the peloton began their ascent up Cipressa, the penultimate climb before Poggio di San Remo.

A favorite going in to the race, Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) was involved in a brutal crash with less than 10 kilometers left in the race, unable to avoid a traffic divider, and had to abandon.

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) looked strong on the climb up Poggio, however Nibali held strong on the wheel of Sagan and rocketed to the front, holding off the peloton and crossing the finish line victorious after over 7 hours of racing.
