Two Riders for Bahrain-Merida Unable to Compete at Vuela a San Juan Intenacional



Two riders for Bahrain-Merida will be unable to compete at the Vuelta a San Juan Internacional as a result of gastroenteritis and have officially withdrawn from the race.

The Bahrain-Merida team announced just hours before the start of Stage 1 in San Juan that Vincenzo Nibali and Mark Padun have come down with a stomach bug, which has rendered the riders unable to compete.

Bahrain-Merida is one of six WorldTour teams competing at the race, and Vincenzo Nibali was considered a top contender for the general classification title.

The 33-year-old Italian rider Nibali has won twice won the Giro d'Italia, along with titles at both the Vuelta a Espana and Tour de France, giving him victories at all three of the Grand Tours.

Padun is a young time-trial specialist, who is in his second year as a pro with the Bahrain-Merida squad and was looking to compete for a victory on Stage 3, which will be a flat and fast 14.4 kilometer time trial that takes place in San Juan.

The Vuelta a San Juan Internacional will depart from San Juan on Sunday, January 21st and take place over 7 stages before concluding in San Juan on January 28th.
