Mitchelton-Scott Rider Takes Tour Down Under Title on Fast Final Stage



On the final day in Adelaide, the peloton set of for the 90 kilometer circuit with sprinters looking to compete for another stage victory in Australia.

Ben O'Connor (Dimension Data) and Logan Owen (EF Education First-Drapac) consistently fought in the front of the pack for much of the race, capturing additional points at the intermediate sprint and KOM checkpoints, with Owen crossing the line in the lead at first intermediate sprint point 36 kilometers from the start and O'Connor besting Owen on the KOM at Montefiore Hill 43.8 kilometers into the stage.

O'Connor held his lead on Owen into the second intermediate sprint, and won the race to the line at the 54 kilometer mark.

However, on the second KOM up Montefiore Hill 24 kilometers from the finish Owen bested O'Connor, as well as Lotto-Soudal rider Thomas De Gendt.

O'Connor was promptly brought back in by the peloton, but Owen held his gap, pushing for as long as he could.

Finally, with two laps remaining, Owen was reeled in as the peloton came back together for the final kilometers.

With only 3 kilometers remaining a crash occurred, as a group of three riders went down on a tight corner at high speeds.

Despite the nasty crash, the peloton was not disrupted as the charged towards the finish.

On a heavily contested sprint for the line, Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) captured another stage, besting other stage winners Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) at the line to take victory on the day.

Mitchelton-Scott rider Daryl Impey finished in the pack and captured the Ochre Jersey for best overall rider, taking home a massive win for himself and the Australian team in their home country.

Peter Sagan captured the Points classification title and donned the Green Jersey after the final stage, adding another sprint title to the Bora-Hansgrohe rider's list of accolades.

Team Sky's Egan Bernal took home the Best Young Rider title, while Nickolas Dlamini (Dimension Data) captured the King of the Mountains honor and Bahrain-Merida won the overall team title.
