On a cloudy January day in France, French riders placed 1st-4th at the 48th edition of the Etoile de Besseges cycling race.
The 2018 Etoile de Besseges began on January 31, beginning in the town of Bellegarde near the French-Swiss border before covering 162 kilometers through eastern France and ending in Beaucaire near the Mediterranean Sea.
A large pack rode towards the finish together, readying for a quick sprint finish.
In the final 100 meters, a pack of five riders each had a chance at taking first on the day.
Ultimately Marc Sarreau (FDJ) was able to make the best push for the line, and emerged victorious on the day.
Close behind were Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie), Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept), and Christopher Laporte (Cofidis), all French riders who took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively, while Belgian rider Sean De Bie (Verandas Willems-Crelan) took 5th on the day.
Stage 2 will be a 151 kilometer course beginning in the city of Nimes and finishing in Generac.
