Australian Rider Takes Stage 2 on Sprint Finish at the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under



A hot Stage 2 at the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under saw another thrilling sprint finish.

The stage set off from Unley in metropolitan Adelaide, with riders tasked at tackling a 148.6 kilometer route into the hills of South Australia.

Will Clark (EF Education First-Drapac), along with Nicholas Dlamini (Dimension Data), Jaime Castrillo (Movistar), and Scott Bowden (University of South Australia) led the breakaway on the day, putting a 35 second gap on the field in the first 2 kilometers.

The breakaway was caught safely before the finish, as a pack of 50 riders rushed for the finish.

Robert Gesink (Lotto NL-Jumbo) attacked in the final kilometer, but could not hold on in the final 200 meters as the sprinters put in one final push for the line.

Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) was able to make a solid jump, but was beat out in the final 50 meters by Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott).

Ewan captured his seventh stage victory at the Tour Down Under in his career, and now takes over as overall leader of the 2018 Tour Down Under with his victory on Stage 2.

Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott), Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Peter Sagan rounded out the top four finishers on the stage.

Stage 3 will depart from Glenelg, covering 148.5 kilometers on a coastal route to the town of Victor Harbor.
