Tour of Austria 2017: Stage 2 Recap

Stage 2 at the Tour of Austria could not have gone much better for the Cannondale-Drapac squad, as Tom Jelte-Slagter sprinted to a stage victory while Sep Vanmarcke retained the yellow jersey as the general classification leader.

Not long after the stage departure the Ferry Dusika Stadium in the Austrian capital city of Wien, five riders began a breakaway from the front of the peloton.

The breakaway group of Dennis Paulus (Hrinkow Advarics), Helmut Trettwer  (WSA-Greenlife), Sebastien Schönberger (Tiro Cycling), Patrick Stosz  (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), and Marcel Neuhauser (Felbermayr-Simplon-WELS) held off the peloton for most of the stage, and built up a 3:30 minute cushion from the pack at one point, but were ultimately unable to avoid being caught. Outside of the stage finish, near the town of Poggstoll, the final remnants of the breakaway were overtaken as the group approached the final climb up to Jasenegg.

With only 12 kilometers remaining in the stage, another break occurred from the peloton as three riders took off in search of a stage victory.

Mekseb Debesay (Dimension Data), Martijn Tusveld (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Tom Jelte-Slagter, and Angel Lopez (Astana), escaped from the pack and fought for the stage on the grinding climb up Jasenegg, which reached a 20 percent gradient at its max. In the end, Jelte-Slagter was able to beat out his three competitors and capture the victory on Stage 2. Vanmarcke was able to beat out the rest of the peloton, and finish 5th on the stage, while remaining in the yellow general classification leader jersey. The Belgian rider will also have the honor of holding the lead in the Tour's points classification as the peloton moves on to the third stage.

Stephan Rabitsch (Felbermayr-Simplon-WELS) has put in a strong Tour to this point, and currently holds the title of mountains classification leader, as well as the best Austrian rider.

Team Dimension Data leads the team classification after Stage 2.

Stage 3 will take the riders from the town of Wieselberg, west of Poggstall where the riders finished Stage 2, to the town of Altheim in the Austrian Braunau am Inn district.
