Eduard Grosu (Romania) captured a stage victory in his home country on the final day, as Egan Bernal (Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec) finished in the lead pack to take the overall victory at the 2017 Sibiu Cycling Tour.
The first climb of the stage began just 1.4 kilometers from the departure as Frederico Canuti (d'Amico-Utensilnord) attacked early to beat out Francesco Gavazzi (Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec) and Daniel Jaramillo (UnitedHealthcare) to the first summit of the day in Dailul Daii.
28 kilometers into the stage, the peloton prepared for the first intermediate sprint of the day in Nocrich, which was won by Roth-Akros rider Damian Luscher, ahead of German Tivani (Unieuro Trevigiani-Hemus 1896) and Ziga Groselj (Adria Mobil).
By the second intermediate sprint in Barghis, 49 kilometers into the day, a group of six riders had established a 1 minute 30 second lead. Griffin Easter (Team Illuminate) was first to cross the line in Barghis, followed closely by Riccardo Cenghialta (Unieuro Trevigiani-Hemus 1896) and Ziga Horvat (Adria Mobil).
The attacks continued on the final climb, as Nicolas Samparisi (d'Amico-Utensilnord) was first to reach the summit at the Pelisor castle, 58 kilometers after the departure.
In Copsa Mica, 45 kilometers from the finish in Sibiu, the lead group comprised of Samparisi, Cenghialta, Easter, Mel van der Veekens (Monkey Town), and Andrea Ruscetta (GM Europa Ovini), clung to a lead of just over one minute from the peloton.
Griffin Easter took the final intermediate sprint title of the day in Seica Mare, 32 kilometers from Sibiu.
Nicolas Samparisi beat out Ziga Horvat and Mel van der Veekens to the penultimate summit of the day in Rusi, as the lead pack's cushion had begun to slowly reduce, with the break group riding only 30 seconds ahead of the chase.
Samparisi once again took the mountains points on the final climb of the day up to Slimnic, holding a 20 seconds solo lead, but as the field approached the finish with 3 kilometers remaining everyone had come back together.
A crash in the peloton with only 2 kilometers until the finish created a frenetic energy in the field and allowed a group of 20 riders to break off for the final sprint to the finish line.
Eduardo Grosu proved to find his sprinting legs in the last kilometer as the Romanian rider took an emphatic stage win to cap off the 2017 edition of the Sibiu Cycling Tour.
Egan Bernal finished in the peloton to capture the overall victory for the Tour. The Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec rider had a lot to celebrate on the final day, as Bernal took the title in the points classification and best young rider classification as well.
Moritz Fussnegger (0711 Cycling) kept his lead in the mountains classification, as proudly wore the green jersey on the podium in Sibiu.
Roth-Akros proved to be the strongest team in the field, putting Colin Stussi and Valentin Baillifard on the podium as second and third place finishers overall, and finished in the blue jersey to mark their title in the team classification.
