Trek-Segafredo 2017 Team Profile

Despite the loss of Fabian Cancella to retirement following the 2016 season, Trek-Segafredo has put together a quality squad for 2017, and currently sits in 6th place on the UCI WorldTour Team Rankings with 4862 UCI points.

The team has ridden with a United States-based licence since 2014, after being registered in Luxembourg from 2011-2014.

Trek, an American bicycle manufacturer, co-title sponsored the team during their first season in 2012 and became the sole title sponsor during the 2014 and 2015 seasons after dropping their title sponsorship for the 2013 season. Beginning in 2016, Segafredo, an Italian coffee company, signed on as a co-title sponsor with Trek.

The Trek-Segrafredo team is outfitted by Italian brand Sportful. The team kits are red and black, with white Trek and Segrafredo Zanetti branded lettering. Trek-Segafredo ride bicycles made by their title sponsor, Trek, and use Shimano components.

While Fabian Cancellara's retirement was a major blow for Trek-Segafredo, the team has retained veteran leadership and remains one of the WorldTour's most successful squads.

The acquisition of Alberto Contador from Tinkoff after the teams dissolution was a major move for Trek-Segafredo. The veteran Spanish rider has had one of professional cycling's most storied careers, and holds an impressive seven Grand Tour individual titles to his name. While Contador has not yet captured a major stage race victory yet in 2017, he has a number of second place finishes in the general classification, including Paris-Nice, Tour of the Basque Country, and the Volta a Catalunya. If Contador is able continue his competitive consistency during his 14th season as a professional cyclist, it is not out of the question to see the timeless Spaniard standing on the podium in Paris on July 23rd.

John Degenkolb will also be another rider to watch during this year's Tour de France, which will mark his fifth time at the Tour and his first as a member of Trek-Segafredo. The German sprinter had a number of top-10 finishes during this year's Spring Classics, which included finishing 5th a Gent-Wevelgem, 7th at Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders, and 10th at Parix-Roubaix. While Degenkolb has been successful at Grand Tour races in the past, capturing 10 stages wins from 2012-2015 and a points classification title in 2014 at the Vuelta a Espana, he has yet to earn a stage victory at the Tour de France. Degenkolb will be looking to shed that distinction this year, and take a stage win on one of the nine sprinter-friendly stages on this year's Tour de France course.

Jarlinson Pantano could also be a threat to capture a stage victory this year at the Tour de France after taking the 15th stage at last year's Tour. Pantano excels on mountainous stages, and will likely be looking to be in the breakaway during one this year's five high altitude finishes.

Trek-Segafredo's announced squad for the 2017 Tour de France will include John Degenkolb, Jarlinson Pantano, Alberto Contador, Fabio Felline, Koen de Kort, Markel Irizar, Haimar Zubeldia, Bauke Mollema, and Michael Gogl.
