Team Sunweb is riding under a new name for the 2017 season after competing under the Giant-Alpecin name for the past two years.
Sunweb, a Dutch-based operator of international tours, took over as the sole title sponsor for the team after Giant, a Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer, dropped their title sponsorship and German shampoo brand Alpecin switched their title sponsorship to Team Katusha.
Team Sunweb has ridden Giant bicycles since joining the WorldTour circuit in 2013, and use Shimano components. The team is outfitted by Etxeondo, and ride in black and white kits with red Sunweb branding.
The Sunweb team has had quite a bit to celebrate already in 2017, especially after Tom Dumoulin captured the Maglia Rosa at the Giro d'Italia in May. Dumoulin beat out Movistar's Nairo Quintana and Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali to secure the first Grand Tour title for the newly named team. The team overall has had a solid season, currently sitting in 7th place in the UCI WorldTour Team Rankings with 4117 UCI points, and have two riders, Dumoulin and Michael Matthews, in the top 12 in the UCI Individual World Ranking.
Tom Dumoulin has proven his place on the Sunweb squad in resounding fashion by leaving this year's Giro d'Italia with the Maglia Rosa. Not only did Dumoulin have a strong showing at the Giro, but the Dutch rider also was crowned the Netherlands National Time Trial champion and put up strong showings earlier in the year, finishing 3rd in the general classification at the Tour of Abu Dhabi and 6th overall at Tirreno-Adriatico. While Dumoulin is not listed on Team Sunweb's official start list for this year's Tour de France, the Dutch rider's Grand Tour victory has been the team's crowning achievement for the season thus far.
The signing of Michael Matthews last August was a major move by Team Sunweb and the Australian rider has become another integral piece to the Sunweb team. Matthews will be looking for his first green jersey after finishing 3rd in the points classification at last year's Tour de France behind Peter Sagan and Marcel Kittel. Matthews has shown his prolific sprinting abilities by capturing eight Grand Tour stage victories in the past 4 years. During the Spring Classics, Matthews was able to post three top-10 finishes, which included finishing in 4th place at Liege-Bastogne-Liege, 8th place at Gent-Wevelgem, and 10th at the Amstel Gold Race.
There will be two riders, Nikias Arndt and Simon Geschke, hailing from Germany on Team Sunweb's 2017 Tour de France squad, which will begin in Dusseldorf.
The official squad for Team Sunweb at this year's edition of the Tour de France will include Nikias Arndt, Simon Geschke, Michael Matthews, Roy Curvers, Warren Barguil, Ramon Sinkeldam, Laurens ten Dam, Mike Teunissen, and Albert Timmer.
