Movistar 2017 Team Profile

The Movistar team has been around since 1980, originally racing under the Reynolds team name, and has held the current team name their title sponsor Movistar, a Spanish telecommunications company, since 2011. Movistar is a Spanish-based team, and are heavily stocked with Spanish riders, having 15 of their 28 riders hailing from Spain.

Movistar ride in blue and green kits, with the unique Movistar "M" symbol on the jersey front, made by Scottish-based company Endura. Movistar has ridden Canyon bikes since 2014 after switching from Pinarello.

Movistar are off to successful team start to the 2017 season, and currently sit 3rd in the UCI WorldTour Team Ranking with 5952 UCI points.

Leading the Movistar team is the diminutive Columbian climber Nairo Quintana. Quintana has steadily rose to prominence on the WorldTour since joining the Movistar team in 2012. Quintana is a favorite to capture the Maillot Jaune at this year's Tour de France after finishing 3rd in the general classification last year, and finishing 2nd in both 2015 and 2013. To this point in 2017, Quintana captured the general classification title at Tirreno-Adriatico and finished second to Tom Dumoulin at the Giro d'Italia by 31 seconds. Quintana will be looking at the Tour de France as the focal point of his 2017 season however, and will hope to capture his third Grand Tour general classification title.

If Nairo Quintana is able to finish in Paris on July 23rd at the top of the general classification, he will have earned overall victories in each of the three Grand Tours after winning the Maglia Rosa in 2014 and the Maillot Rojo in 2016.

The timeless veteran, Alejandro Valverde, has also continued to be an integral piece to the Movistar team. Valverde's career includes six La Fleche Wallonne titles, four Liege-Bastogne-Liege titles, two Spanish National Road Race titles, two Criterium du Dauphine titles, and a Maillot Rojo at the 2009 Vuelta a Espana. Valverde has also put in an outstanding 2017 season so far, winning La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege, as well as capturing the general classification and mountains classification titles at the Volta a Catalunya, the general classification and points titles at the Tour of the Basque Country, and the general classification and points classification at Volta a Andulucia.

Despite his continued success in 2017 however, Valverde has stated that he will be working to support Nairo Quintana at this year's Tour de France, and will not be seeking the Maillot Jaune himself.

Movistar has released their full 2017 Tour de France squad, which will include Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde, Jesus Herrada, Andrey Amador, Carlos Betancur, Jasha Sutterlin, Jonathan Castroviejo, Imanol Erviti, and Daniele Bennati.
