The Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec team has much to celebrate about on day 1 of the Sibiu Cycling Tour after Andrea Palini and Luca Pacioni completed the opening time trial in the first and second fastest times.
At 6:00 p.m. local time the Prologue stage kicked off and this year's edition of the Sibiu Cycling Tour officially began.
Riders started the Sibiu Cycling Tour with a 2.3 kilometer individual time trial, which took off from the city center square in Sibiu, Romania.
Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec displayed their depth as a team, putting Palini and Pacioni on the podium on day 1, as well as having Raffaello Bonusi place eighth, coming in only six seconds slower than the stage winner Palini. Palini posted a time of 3:07 for the route, while Pacioni finished in a time of 3:09. For their efforts, the Androni Giacattoli-Sidermec squad will sit in 1st place in the team classification as well going into Stage 1.
The fasted rider of the Prologue stage was Carlos Eduardo Alzate, a member of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team from the United States. Alzate completed the time trial in a time of 3:11, which helped put the UnitedHealthcare team in 3rd place in the team classification on the day.
The team from Poland, CCC Sprandi Polkowice, also put in a good showing on day 1 in Romania. Maciej Paterski led the way on the Prologue stage, crossing the finish line in a time of 3:12, which was good enough for 4th place for the day. Lukasz Owsian was also integral to the CCC Sprandi Polkowice team's success on the day, finishing less than a second behind his teammate Paterski and in 7th place overall.
Stage 1 will once again depart from Sibiu, making a 212 kilometer loop through the Romanian countryside, before finishing once again in Sibiu.
